So your wondering what this is all about?

So, after reading the introduction, most of you are wondering what you are going to have to do with the Pythagorean Theorem. Well, very simply put, you are going to research the theorem, and tell me all about it. You are going to tell me things like when Pythagoras discovered the theorem, who may of used it before him, what it is used for, are there any practical uses for it, how do you prove its true, and what president has his own proof for it?

1st Step

You will be split into groups of 3-4 students for this project. The very first thing you will need to do is some research on the Pythagorean Theorem. This is where you will find all the answers to your questions.
  • You need to find out who Pythagoras was?
  • What all did he do in his life?
  •  Who may have known the Theorem before him?
  • How did Pythagoras prove the theorem?
  • What President also has a proof for the Theorem?
  • How do you use the Theorem?
  • Are there any other uses for the Theorem?
  • How can the Theorem be practically applied to real life?
These are just some ideas to get you started, please include any other information that you feel is pertinent to your paper. You are not limited to these ideas

2nd Step

You will need to become comfortable with using the Pythagorean Theorem in a variety of ways.
  • You will need to how to find a missing side length of a right triangle. The triangle can be missing either leg or the hypotenuse.
  • You will need to learn how to determine if a triangle is in fact a right triangle by analyzing the side lengths.
  • You will also need to use the theorem to find distances both on the coordinate plane and in real life.

3rd Step

You will need to create a Power Point, wiki, video presentation, or other type of presentation with visuals showing all the information you learned about the Pythagorean Theorem. Basically, you are going to be the teacher for about 10 minutes, and you need to educate myself and the rest of your classmates on everything about the Pythagorean Theorem, including how to use it.

Final Step

Lastly, you are going to need to come up with 3-4 problems created by you. These problems need to showcase the different ways the Pythagorean Theorem can be used. In addition to the problems, you will also need to turn in an answer key to those problems. I will then put the entire classes problems together in a packet, and distribute it for everyone to solve. These problems need to be original, and showcase the real world applications of the Pythagorean Theorem. The problems should be considered challenging problems.
